Just a few moments ago, it was announced that the Toronto Blue Jays have struck out in their attempt to sign Pete Alonso to a contract as he has remained with the New York Mets signing a two year deal worth $54 million.
This signing has been one of the most watched free agents in recent memory for the Blue Jays as many indications showed that Alonso may head to the Blue Jays.
Unfortunately, that was not the case and the Blue Jays come up empty.
Mets, 1B Pete Alonso reportedly agree to 2-year deal with an opt-out after 2025, per multiple reports including http://MLB.com's Mark Feinsand.
Alonso preferred to stay with the Mets
This new deal will pay Alonso $30 million in his first year and will have an opt in clause which will pay him $24 million next year which could mean he could be back in the same position if he prefers to leave the Mets once again.
Sources: #BlueJays confirmed had the largest offer for Pete Alonso. #Mets presented this newly structured deal to Pete Alonso this week. Pete clearly wanted to be back with #Mets. #BlueJays lose out on yet another guy, a guy whom they very much thought they were going to get. Not sure if they pivot now to Bregman or not. Think priority as always will be to try and lock Vladdy Jr up. #MoccBomb
"He's a great Met," Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns said about Alonso at the end of October. "I hope we have him back. I think we both understand this is a process, and everyone's got their own interest. And Pete deserves to go out into the free agent market and see what's out there, and then ultimately make the best choice for him and his family."
Stearns added: "I think Pete has been absolutely a foundational piece for this organization. A tremendous Met. He's performed at a very high level." David Strearns
Blue Jays very disappointed in losing out of Alonso
Many Blue Jays fans and pundits felt that the team had a good chance of signing Alonso as indications showed it was down too the Mets and the Jays. Some fans felt that General Manager Ross Atkins had turned things around and may have landed an important piece that could have helped the Jays this season.
With the news broken, Blue Jays fans along with Blue Jays management will need to digest what just happened and hope that they can sign another player like Alex Bregman.
