The off-season is almost done but the Toronto Blue Jays still have plans to make some moves including possibly signing former Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Yasmani Grandal.
The Blue Jays currently have Alejandro Kirk as their main catcher but it is their backup options that are quite shaky at the moment which is why signing another catcher could be a solid option.
The Blue Jays could be interested in former Pirates catcher Yasmani Grandal
The Blue Jays currently have Tyler Heineman as they back up catcher behind Kirk but he is far from the most reliable option as he is not a great hitter but he has proven to be solid defenisvely.
Toronto has acquired Heineman multiple times in recent years and hasn't shown much interest in replacing him this off-season, but it's tough to ignore his short MLB resume that includes a 65 wRC+ and one home run in 112 games spread out over five seasons. -Ashbourne
If the Blue Jays are seriously interested in
Grandal, he could end up being a great option for them as he has much more experience and despite slowing down at the plate over the last year he has had multiple 20+ homerun seasons in his career.
Grandal would be a safer bet to give Toronto something at the plate while holding his own behind it. That difference between the two players' value may not be massive, but Grandal could likely be had for very little, and he'd provide more insurance for an Alejandro Kirk injury. -Ashbourne
The main issue when it comes to
Grandal is that he has been known to get into arguments with his teammates as he did in 2023 with Chicago White Sox Tim Anderson.
Grandal isn't considered the warmest and fuzziest character, even if a reported incident with teammate Tim Anderson in 2023 is up for interpretation. -Ashbourne
While this is certainly an issue, it might still be worth taking a shot at him since the Blue Jays could definitely benefit from adding another catcher.
