The Toronto Blue Jays have made several moves in their bullpen as the team continues to work in reshaping it with spring training less than two weeks away and it appears that one pitcher could be helpful in Cal Quantrill.
In 2024, Quantrill had some promising signs despite pitching for a last-place Rockies team: - 44.4% GB Rate - Career-low 11.1 degree launch angle - Splitter: +3.4 runs above average
General manager Ross Atkins has made it clear that he wants to add another arm into his bullpen and Quantrill could be a low-cost option for the team and would be a solid addition to Nick Sandli and
Yimi Garcia and
Jeff Hoffman.
Quantrill looking for a bounce back season after tough 2024
The right-hander is coming off a rough season with the Colorado Rockies, where he posted a 4.98 ERA through 29 starts and 148 1/3 innings pitched.
He led the NL in walks (69) and saw his BB/9 elevated to 4.2 while striking out batters at a 6.7 K/9 clip.
He finished the year with a 5.32 FIP and a 1.517 WHIP and entered free agency after being non-tendered this winter for the first time in his career. - Tyson Shushkewich
It appears that Quantrill would better serve the Blue Jays as a relief pitcher in the bullpen as his numbers clearly show that that is his calling rather than a starter.
The upside he holds as a bullpen pitcher is exactly what the Blue Jays could use and he would also carry his name as he is the son of former Blue Jays pitcher Paul Quantrill.
Cal Quantrill presents a low-risk option for the Blue Jays to have another depth arm in the bullpen
Through his 38 appearances as a bullpen arm, the soon-to-be 30-year-old owns a 1.91 ERA through 61 1/3 innings.
Working as a multi-inning relief arm, Quantrill has allowed just 13 earned runs and has compiled a 4-1 record while also seeing improved numbers with his command, walking just 22 batters.
He's also held opponents to a .233/.316/.323 slash line when working out of the pen and has collected 53 strikeouts in the process, an uptick from his comparable numbers in the rotation.
Ross Atkins still quite busy trying to reshape Blue Jays before Spring
Training
With the offseason closing out and spring training on the horizon, the Blue Jays are still working the phones trying to acquire a couple of more pieces to help round out the roster before the beginning of Grapefruit League.
Cal Quantrill, Nasty 83mph Curveball...and is fired up.
Adding another bullpen pitcher like Quantrill would likely be a one-year deal as the Blue Jays would like to see what he could offer and what he would bring to the mound.
It remains to be seen on whether the Jays will actually try to acquire him but he would be a viable option even with the terrible year from last year.
