The Toronto Blue Jays are still looking at all possible options if they cannot agree of terms with Vladimir Guerrero Jr and it looks like they might have found his replacement in free agent Pete Alonso.
The Blue Jays have already made one offer to Guerrero that was more than $100 million lower than he is looking for and despite reports claiming they will raise their offer, there seems to be a good chance they are unable to get a deal done.
The Blue Jays now have until February 18th to get a deal done with Guerrero which is the first day of full squad practice at Spring Training which is when Guerrero has stated he will no longer discuss an extension.
According to reports, if the Blue Jays are unable to get a deal done, they will be interested in trading Guerrero and signing free agent Pete Alonso.
On Wednesday, ESPN's David Schoenfield projected the Blue Jays as one of the top remaining free-agent fits for New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso, who could complement Guerrero in 2025 while potentially filling his position if and when he leaves. -Roberts
The Blue Jays would likely look to have them possibly both on the team next year and if they end up losing Guerrero or having to trade him, they will at least have Alonso as a replacement.
The Blue Jays need offense whether Guerrero stays or leaves which is why Alonso could be a great option as he would be bring some much needed offense as a DH next season.
"They (the Blue Jays) need offense," Schoenfield wrote. "While it's unlikely they would trade Guerrero -- at least until the trade deadline, and only then if they're out of it -- signing Alonso as a DH could still work and provide a potential replacement for Guerrero in 2026." -Schoenfield
If the Blue Jays do end up singing Guerrero to an extension, adding Alonso could also still be a potentially solid move having him as a full time DH as their offense would thrive with the two of them.
