Baseball pundits and fans across Major League Baseball have been grading the Toronto Blue Jays offseason and it appears their top signing has been labeled a potential bust even before the season begins.
Didn't take long for Anthony Santander to become close with Bo and Davis
The signing of Anthony Santander who was given a five-year $92.5 million deal may
be considered a bust according to Bleacher Report's Tim Kelly.
Major question marks with contract and a decline in his play
Last season, Santander had 44 home runs Which was the best in his career, but his overall batting average was his worst since he started his career in baseball at .235. There are also many question marks regarding his defensive capabilities especially in the outfield.
Anthony Santander repping his new team
"The best-case scenario for the Blue Jays is that Santander hits close to 40 home runs this season, allowing Toronto to contend in the loaded AL East and convincing Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and/or Bo Bichette to re-sign," wrote Kelly. "But when you add in that Santander is-at best-an average corner outfielder, there could be some lean years at the end of this contract if his power production declines,
because his offensive value is so tied to it." Tim Kelly
The 30-year-old right fielder was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles, and has played his entire career up until now with the Orioles. Through 746 games played, he's had 155 home runs with 435 RBI and has a batting average of .246 along with an OPS of .776 and an OBP of .307.
"Looks great on me already." Anthony Santander puts on a @BlueJays jersey for the first time.
Scrutiny will remain over Blue Jays after offseason
The Blue Jays organization will attempt to push this scrutiny away while they prepare for their new season but it's safe to say it's going to hang over the organization for some time.
Questions continue to swirl regarding signings like Santander, the contract extension miss of Vladimir Guerrero junior and the question mark around the fate of pending free agent Bo Bichette.
While everyone hopes for the best, the uncertainty will follow this team all the way till the end of the season as President Mark Shapiro and general manager Ross Atkins have put the Blue Jays in a rather difficult position.
