Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Yariel Rodriguez was said to be heading to the bullpen this season but according to GM Ross Atkins he will be competing for a spot int he starting rotation.

When the Blue Jays signed pitcher Max Scherzer earlier this week, it was believed that this moved pushed Rodriguez to the bullpen but it looks like that is not exactly what is happening.

Blue Jays pitcher Yariel Rodriguez could end up stealing a spot on the starting rotation

During a press conference yesterday, Atkins stated that Rodriguez will be taking on a heavy workload in Spring Training and will be competing for the fifth starting rotation spot.
According to Sportsnet writer Arden Zwelling, general manager Ross Atkins has discussed Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Yariel Rodrguez's role. Atkins talked about how Rodriguez will take on a heavier workload in spring training and fight for a chance at the fifth rotation spot. -Serrao

Since Jose Berrios, Kevin Gausman, Max Scherzer and Bowden Francis seem to all be locks, the one spot Rodriguez could end up taking is Bassitt's as he put up the worst numbers last season and is entering the final year of his deal.
Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins says Yariel Rodriguez will be stretched out in spring training and compete for fifth spot in club's rotation

Expect Jake Bloss, Adam Macko, Eric Lauer, and Adam Kloffenstein to form next layer of starting depth in triple-A rotation
Rodriguez does have an uphill battle ahead of him if he plans on taking Bassitt's spot but the one thing he does have on his side is that he is much younger so there is still a possibility that they look to put him in the starting rotation if he does well at camp.
It will be interesting to see how Rodriguez does at Spring Training as it will dictate where he starts the 2025 season.
If he does not end up getting a starting spot, Rodriguez could still be a massive part of the Blue Jays lineup as a relief pitcher.
