The Toronto Blue Jays announced some surprising news yesterday as they have decided to sign another catcher, this time former Texas Rangers catcher Matt Whatley.

The Blue Jays are making some final additions to their roster before Spring Training which is why they have closed on a few last minute deals prior to camp starting in less than two weeks.

The Blue Jays announced yesterday that they have agree to terms on a minor league deal with former Rangers catcher Matt Whatley which also includes a non-roster Spring Training invitation.
The Toronto Blue Jays signed C Matt Whatley to a minor league contract.
The team announced that Whatley along with catcher Robert Brooks and right handed pitcher Andrew Bash have all been invited to Spring Training on non-roster invitations.

Despite Ross Atkins stating earlier this off-season that the team with their current catcher duo, with all these recent catcher additions, Tyler Heineman needs to be on top of his game if he wants to keep his spot.
The good news with all these additions is that the Blue Jays finally have some depth at the catcher position which they did not have last season which was an issue due to injuries.
Clearly Alejandro Kirk's spot is locked in but the question will be who will end up winning the back up spot as the team has quite a few options now.
