Toronto Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins has made many questionable moves without any consequences but his latest acquisition of Myles Straw and bonus international pool money to try and land Roki Sasaki might finally have him repercussions.
The Blue Jays acquired Straw and $2 million from the Cleveland Guardians to sign Roki Sasaki which did not work as he signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers which has left the Blue Jays with having to pay Straw's contract but getting no benefits in return.
Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins might finally see consequences for latest questionable move
Atkins traded for Straw and the $12 million they will have to pay him over the next 2 years because the goal was acquiring the additional international pool money to sign Sasaki but since that fell through the Blue Jays are simply just stuck paying Straw.
Must read on Blue Jays Insider
While Atkins has tried many times in the past trying to land top end free agents that did not work out like Juan Soto and Shohei Ohtani, those pursuits never ended up costing the team any money but this time it has.
All worthwhile pursuits of excellent players who would have been a huge help - and none of those pursuits cost the Blue Jays almost $12 million (U.S.).
But the pursuit of Sasaki did, and (no pun intended) it should be the last straw with a front office that had an incredible team in 2021 and has made it worse with each passing year. -Wilner
This is quite the big mistake by
Atkins since they are now stuck with a player that has the worst OPS among qualified hitters last season with .579 which was 35 points worse than Maikel Garcia's .614 which was second worse.
Since signing that deal, the 30-year-old has hit .229 with a .579 on-base-plus-slugging percentage. That's 35 points worse than the .614 posted by Kansas City's Maikel Garcia, which was the lowest OPS among qualified major-league hitters last season. -Wilner
Adding this to the multiple free agents that
Atkins missed out on plus the current disaster that is going on with Vladimir Guerrero Jr's contract extension, it seems clear that the Blue Jays need to finally get rid of Atkins.
Hopefully the owners finally make the right decision and fire Atkins as the team will only continue to sink if he sticks around.
