Toronto Blue Jays GM John Schneider spoke to the media recently about outfielder George Springer and it looks like some big changes are coming for him in the field.
Springer is already at risk of losing his spot as the team's leadoff hitter after he struggled offensively last season and they have stated that they are looking at other options such as Will Wagner and Andres Gimenez.
Blue Jays manager John Schneider stated that Springer will likely be taking some reps in left field
The Blue Jays have been having Springer play in left field so far in Spring Training as he is already solid in right and center field which is why it makes sense to test him out in left.
Daulton Varsho is also the team's clear centerfielder but with the addition of Anthony Santander, the Blue Jays seem to be trying out a few different combinations to see what works best.
Through fly ball drills and shagging BP here, George Springer has been hanging out in left field with Anthony Santander in right.
It's February, etc., but since Springer already knows RF and CF well, it makes sense to feed him a ton of LF in camp. #BlueJays
Manager John Schneider also confirmed earlier this week that they would be testing
Springer out in left field which is a spot he has only played three innings at throughout his career.
John Schneider said Blue Jays may use George Springer "in left a little bit" in LF this season, a spot he's played just once for three innings in the majors.
That would let Anthony Santander play some RF. He last played in LF in 2023, doing it once. Has 90 career games there.
This is quite a humbling spot to be in for Springer as he is still making $25 million per season and leads all hitters in the MLB history with the most homeruns at leadoff but he must feel a bit out of place because it looks like the Blue Jays are trying to move him around because he is not good enough to be used in the same way he once was.
Hopefully these changes to Springer's spot on the Blue Jays roster end up helping improving his game but time will tell.
