The reasoning behind Spencer Horwitz being traded to the Guardians has been announced
Horwitz spent the majority of his time with the Blue Jays as a designated hitter since his natural position of first base was occupied by Vladimir Guerrero Jr and when moved to second base, he struggled defensively.
The only option the team had was is if Guerrero moved over to third base which did not seem like a solid option and keeping Horwitz around as a DH did not work either since his bat is not strong enough just yet.
From the infielder's perspective, his path to consistent playing time on the field was blocked by All-Star first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. As a natural first baseman, the Jays had Horwitz take reps at second base but his fielding ability lacked behind most of the other internal options and he spent a good chunk of the stretch in the DH spot instead. There wasn't an outcome where Horwitz could replace Guerrero barring the slugger moving to third base. -Chung
In a perfect world, the Blue Jays would have been able to hold onto Horwitz and move a weaker infielder but unfortunately in trade situation, the better the player, the more a team has to give up.
While it would have been desirable for Toronto to part ways with the least promising talents in their depth charts, the nature of the trade market requires paying a higher price. In that sense, sending someone of Horwitz's calibre to bring players who can effectively fill in the missing gaps. -Chung
While fans would have liked to see what kind of player Horwitz would have turned into in Toronto, if there plan is to truly get back to the top of the AL East next season, moving him seemed necessary.
Hopefully this move of bringing in Gimenez for Horwitz ends up working in the Blue Jays favor.
