Toronto Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins is trying to land several free agents that remain on the open market, and one is likely to sign who is pitcher Nick Pivetta formerly of the Boston Red Sox.
Blue Jays are interested in Nick Pivetta. Honestly I wouldn't be shocked if he ended up being the Blue Jays biggest signing this winter
It's not been a secret that the Blue Jays are seeking to acquire another starting pitcher as the team plans to move Yariel Rodriguez to the bullpen and help strengthen their relievers which would open a spot for another starter.
Starting pitching a priority for Blue Jays
He has a career 4.76 ERA and 1,139 strikeouts. In five seasons with the Red Sox, he has a 4.29 ERA in 633 innings of work. The 31-year-old is not an ace but could be a great option in the middle of the Blue Jays rotation. - Aaliyan Mohammed The Sporting News
There is a strong belief that Pivetta will land a two year deal worth $27 million Which seems to be a new normal for many free agents who have not signed long term deals.
The Blue Jays could certainly benefit from a deal like this as it would give them a chance to see how he would settle into their rotation and potentially sign a longer-term deal in the future.
Pivetta turned down qualifying offer from Red Sox
Pivetta and the RedSox many throughout the league as they had offered him a qualifying offer worth $21 million for the 2025 season to which he turned around and turned the deal down despite he made $7.5 million.
Blue Jays have unofficially signed their 1st FA with a Qualifying Offer They're still pursuing Alex Bregman or Pete Alonso, which would cost their 3rd & 6th highest draft picks Nick Pivetta could be next, as a 3rd QO signing wouldn't have any penalties
It would be a homecoming for Pivetta as he was born in Victoria BC and could help the only Canadian team in Major League baseball become a stronger organization add much needed depth down in their pitching ranks.
As the offseason continues, Atkins along with President Mark Shapiro are adamant that they would like to add more talent to the team prior to Opening Day.
With the recent addition of Santander,it has given the team more momentum and may attract several prominent free agents that remain including Pivetta as the Blue Jays attempt to secure more stars.
The Blue Jays are also trying to make a strong case for their face of their organization who is Vladimir Guerrero junior who recently signed a one-year extension but would like to sign a long term extension for no less than $450 million.
With the recent renovations to their stadium, and the addition of Santander this could perhaps sway him to sign long term and get him under contract.
