The Toronto Blue Jays are still in serious talks with free agent Pete Alonso and if they end up signing him it could be the end for Ernie Clement in Toronto.

The Blue Jays are still the favorites to land Alonso as the most recent reports have stated that the two parties should end up finalizing on a deal as they are closing in on a $90 million deal.

Ernie Clement's future with the Blue Jays is now more uncertain than ever

The Blue Jays as of right now have a loaded infield with the addition of Andres Gimenez but if they close on Pete Alonso and push Vladimir Guerrero Jr to third base, the only spot left for Clement would be as a utility man.
If the Blue Jays sign a free agent like Alex Bregman (who they're rumoured to be in on, of course), Clement is the perfect super utility. -Delnaey

However, since Bo Bichette does not want to re-sign in Toronto, there is a chance that they trade him and if they do, Clement might have a spot at shortstop if they don't trade for another shortstop.
Those aren't the only two positions he plays though. In 2024, the 28-year-old played 21 innings at second base and two innings in left field, heck, he even pitched an inning. He's also played first base in his career and surely wouldn't be that bad in the two outfield positions. -Delaney

Ideally, keeping Clement would be great for the Blue Jays as he had a solid first full season in the MLB last season as a Gold Glove finalist at third base while hitting 12 homeruns with a .263 batting average.
Last season Clement hit a career-high 12 home runs with a .263/.284/.408 slash line for a 94 wRC+. While he had a slightly below-average bat, Clement was terrific with the glove, posting 9 Defensive Runs Saved and 3 Outs Above Average in 661 innings at the hot corner. He was a nominee for the American League third base Gold Glove but fell to the aforementioned Bregman. -Delaney

If the Blue Jays do end up having to trade Clement if they no longer have room for him, they will be able to get a great return as he is young and has proving that he can be a good player in the MLB.
It will be interesting to see what happens in the coming days.
