The Toronto Blue Jays are almost a month into Spring Training and the main topic in camp has been Vladimir Guerrero Jr and his contract negotiations.
The Blue Jays are expecting Vladimir Guerrero Jr to continue to be a distraction this season
The Blue Jays were unable to agree on terms with
Guerrero before the deadline that he set and since then the main topic around the Blue Jays has been his negotiations and his next potential contract.
According to reports, the Blue Jays are expecting this Guerrero situation to become quite the distraction this season as it has already been a big one throughout Spring Training.
A couple of months later, another column warned that the upcoming year could turn into a circus if the Jays enter the season with Guerrero's situation unresolved. Every road trip risked becoming a sideshow with local reporters flocking to the Jays star. -Chisholm
Guerrero has definitely not helped the situation as he has stated he wants to focus on the team but has said in interviews that he would be willing to play for the New York Yankees next season and even liked a photoshopped picture on Instagram.
In February, Guerrero told the New York Post that he would be open to playing for the Yankees next season, and reportedly liked a Photoshopped image on Instagram of himself wearing a Yankees uniform. In March, he's still answering questions about the failed talks. -Chisholm
The stories regarding Guerrero's free agency next off-season has already been a major topic but the team is at risk of dealing with even more problems if they are off to a slow start this season since that will create a ton of trade rumors.
Guerrero is a popular guy, so that attention seems unlikely to end any time soon. If the Jays get off to a slow start, trade speculation will become deafening. If they contend, it will be against the backdrop of his looming free agency. -Chisholm
While the Blue Jays have been able to focus on playing this Spring despite the distractions, it will be interesting to see at what point the players start to get annoyed with all of this during the season.
