Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Daulton Varsho had an unbelievable season this past year but unfortunately it was only defensively.
Varsho was clearly one of the best outfielders in the MLB this season and should finally win that much deserved golden glove despite there being no guarantees just yet as he has been cheated out of one in the past.
Statistically, Varsho has been a machine on defense with 29 defensive runs saved in 2024 which is the most by any outfielder in the entire league which proves just how dominant he was for the Blue Jays.
Varsho's real issue came at the plate as he finished with a .214 batting average, .293 on base percentage, .407 slugging percentage with 18 homeruns and 137 strikeouts.
Plate Appearances: 513
Batting Average: .214
On-Base Percentage: .293
Slugging Percentage: .407
Home Runs: 18
Strikeouts: 137
Walks: 48
Fangraphs WAR: 3.3
According to reports, Varsho's struggle at the plate is not linked to hit bat speed as it seems to be up to par with the average speed in the MLB, the struggle seems to be directly linked to his contact, meaning his hand eye coordination.
Can one stat explain Daulton Varsho's hitting struggles?
Hopefully this is something that Varsho could work on this off-season as clearly the speed is there, he just needs to get better at choosing his pitches and connecting with the ball.
