The Toronto Blue Jays seem like they are desperately trying to land free agent pitcher Max Scherzer but if they miss out on him, it looks like they have a back up option in Jack Flaherty.

The Blue Jays have apparently made an offer to Scherzer as it is a one year deal worth $16 million but negotiations have stalled as he is hoping for Toronto to close on Pete Alonso before he commits to the team.

While Scherzer had a solid season in 2024 there are some pitchers that are still availble with better numbers but none have as much experience as him or have been good for as long.
If the Blue Jays fail to land Scherzer, former Dodger pitcher Jack Flaherty could be a great option as he is the best free agent pitcher still available when looking at last year's numbers.
Upside: Young enough to be a rotation staple for years to come. Best 2024 performer left on the market. -Ashbourne

The downside when it comes to Flaherty is he has a long list of injury problems and has battled with consistency issues as only two years ago he finished with a 4.99 ERA.
Downside: Relatively extensive recent injury history. Posted a 4.99 ERA as recently as 2023. -Ashbourne

The injury issue is definitely worrying since the Blue Jays have had a ton of issues in the last couple years when it comes to keeping their pitchers healthy but Flaherty might be worth taking the risk.
Some would argue that Flaherty should be the Blue Jays top target when it comes to starting pitchers instead of Scherzer since he was better last season but it is hard to argue when Scherzer has been one of the best pitchers over the last decade.
Whether the Blue Jays close of Scherzer or Flaherty, it seems like a must that they sign at least one starting pitcher before the start of the season.
