The Toronto Blue Jays have been riddled with injuries so far this year and the season has yet to even begin. To add to the long list of players out, the Jays announced today that relief pitchers Jordan Romano and Erik Swanson are out with injuries but there has yet to be an announcement on if they will miss Opening Day.

The Blue Jays cannot seem to catch a break so far this season, as they continue to battle injuries.
Updated Toronto Blue Jays Opening Day roster/depth chart projection:
RP Jordan Romano (elbow inflammation) and RP Erik Swanson (forearm tightness) moved to projected IL. Neither has been ruled out for Opening Day, but not much time left.

The team announced that Romano is currently dealing with a elbow inflammation but have not disclosed how serious the injury is. Over the past two seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays, Jordan Romano has been a reliable and effective pitcher out of the bullpen. In the 2022 season, he appeared in 66 games, pitching 66 innings with an impressive 2.84 ERA and 1.09 WHIP. Romano struck out 84 batters while only giving up 23 walks, showing his ability to control the ball.
Moving into the 2023 season, Romano continued his strong performance, appearing in 63 games and pitching 64.1 innings. He maintained a stellar 2.61 ERA and 1.08 WHIP, further solidifying his reputation as a reliable late-inning option. Romano recorded 79 strikeouts while walking just 18 batters, demonstrating his improved command and effectiveness on the mound.
Overall, Jordan Romano's last two seasons with the Blue Jays have been marked by consistency, with impressive strikeout numbers which has led to two all-star game appearances.
On the other hand, Erik Swanson, is out with forearm tightness which does not sound too bad but the team had yet to release any future update. Swanson's path to becoming a reliable reliever for the Toronto Blue Jays wasn't always easy. After a promising stint in the minors, his 2020 season with the Seattle Mariners was forgettable. He pitched a mere 7.2 innings, surrendering 11 earned runs for a staggering 12.91 ERA.
However, 2022 marked a dramatic turnaround for the relief pitcher. He was traded to the Blue Jays and Swanson thrived in a full-time relief role. He appeared in a career-high 69 games, tossing over 53 innings. His ERA plummeted to an impressive 2.97, demonstrating newfound control. He added another weapon to his arsenal, collecting 4 saves when called upon to close out games. Swanson's strikeout shined as he took struck out 75 batters. This remarkable transformation from struggling starter to dependable reliever cemented his place as a key contributor to the Blue Jays' pitching staff.
Hopefully both these injuries are minor and they will be back in the lineup for opening day against the Rays.
