The rumors have been swirling around the Toronto Blue Jays for the past several months which includes their best player Vladimir Guerrero junior who had recently signed a one-year extension for $25 million.
Major League Baseball insider Jon Heyman dropped some major news regarding an idea that he would be traded to the New York Mets as a fan indicated that some rumor mill has been heating up as of late.
Day 88 of posting Vladimir Guerrero Jr until the Blue Jays sign him to an extension
Heyman thinks a Guerreo Jr. trade will not happen to the Mets
«Vladdy is not getting traded. I just don't believe that Toronto has any inclination to trade their best player. They are going to try to sign him and they have right up until I think it's February 18th, when he is reporting somewhere in that neighborhood and they are going to make a big effort. Does that mean they are going to be able to sign him? I'm not so sure about that. These star players with one year to go are not often signed; they usually go to free agency.»
There's a strong belief that the Blue Jays will do everything in their power to try to sign Vladimir to a new deal as soon as they can.
Numbers have been thrown around over the past several weeks including $450 million all the way up to $585 million over 13 years which some have said he has rejected but others say otherwise.
SOURCES: It is believed among the industry that the Toronto Blue Jays and 1B/3B Vladimir Guerrero Jr will agree upon an extension before his February 17th deadline.
After signing his one year extension, many Blue Jays fans wonder if he will remain with the team long term or he'll head elsewhere to free agency and it appears the Blue Jays are putting trying to put contingencies into place in case he heads to free agency.
No guarantee the Blue Jays will land other free agents
The team is working hard to try to acquire Pete Alonso and Alex Bregman who both will command high salaries.
If signed, they could give the Blue Jays some leverage as if Vlad decides to leave or would be traded just prior to the trade deadline if a deal cannot be struck the Jays would recoup some assets and have their base is covered.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. turned in a dominant second half of the season en route to a .323 AVG and .940 OPS in 2024. The Blue Jays slugger lands at #4 on The Shredder's #Top10RightNow list at first base.
Of course, there is no guarantee that either of these players will sign with the Blue Jays but news has been indicating that at least one may be interested in heading to Rogers place.
It's going to be a wild next few weeks as spring training is around the corner and the Blue Jays hope to have their rosters ready to evaluate and be ready for opening day on April 1st.
