At 40 years old, Joey Votto is still committed to playing baseball at a high level. Unfortunately, he can't get into the Toronto Blue Jays lineup right now because he is suffering from an ankle injury.
The season began on Thursday with the Blue Jays defeating the Tampa Bay Rays by a score of 8-2. Despite the win, fans were thinking about Votto and the kind of experience he will eventually bring to the dugout. In a report from The Toronto Sun, Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins spoke about Votto and where he is with his injury right now. As it turns out, Votto could be getting back into the swing of things, very soon.
"I think he's days (away) from baseball activities. He still feels a little bit of tightness in his ankle. Then he'll want to get into essentially having a full spring training and getting that workload built up in his legs and his swing so that he can recover and bounce back on a daily basis."
Votto was in attendance at the team's Opening Day game. He was sitting high up at Tropicana Field, and had a great view of the Blue Jays' dugout. On Instagram, he showed his support for his teammates, saying he couldn't miss opening day.

As for what will happen to Votto when he's ready to play, it appears as though a trip to the minors is likely. Atkins noted that Votto wants to play at a high level and is aware that he will need to get back in shape. Simply put, going to Buffalo will act as a conditioning stint.
"He's obviously extremely open-minded. He wants to make sure, most importantly, that he's at an elite level and not just a level where he's participating. We will be very mindful of giving him every chance to do that. The most likely scenario would be some time essentially building up a spring training and then moving to Buffalo at some point. He doesn't have a firm timeline on that, but we'll conned on a daily basis as an organization."
Today, the Blue Jays will take on the Tampa Bay Rays in the second game of the season. It will start at 6:50 PM Eastern Standard Time, and the game will be broadcast on Sportsnet, in Canada.
