The Blue Jays are interest in signing free agent Pete Alonso
Alonso was offered a $21.05 million qualifying offer by the New York Mets but ended up turning it down and decided to enter the free agent market after having spent his entire career with the Mets.
Alonso turned down the $21.05 million qualifying offer from the New York Mets earlier this offseason, a standard move to pursue a maximum contract while testing free agency. The Mets will attempt to retain Alonso, however, various clubs have an interest in the hard-hitting right-handed batter. -Prasad
Alonso would be a nice fit for the Blue Jays since he would be able to team up with Guerrero and become a 1-2 punch at the plate like they once had with Jose Bautista and Josh Donaldson back in the 2010's.
Alonso could fit in as the Blue Jays everyday first baseman and potential three or four-hole hitter in the lineup., forming a one-two punch with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. This would be similar to the old Jose Bautista/Josh Donaldson duo in some ways in terms of power and putting some fear into opposing pitchers. This would be beneficial on the power aspect, especially if the Blue Jays are unsuccessful in the Juan Soto push. -Prasad
If the Blue Jays decide to sign Alonso, he would be playing first base which means they would move Guerrero over to third base and likely have Ernie Clement play second base which would fix all of their infield issues.
In terms of contract, Alonso would likely cost the Blue Jays more than they plan on spending since it has revealed that they do not want to spend much this off-season but bringing him in would be worth the contract, especially since he is only 30 years old.
