The Toronto Blue Jays have yet to make a big signing this off-season but have their eyes on quite a few players including some recently non-tendered players such as Kyle Finnegan, Hoby Milner and Jacob Webb.
The Blue Jays have a ton of holes to fill in their current roster and need to start making moves as players as already starting to sign a one of the top pitchers available in Blake Snell just signed with the Dodgers.
The Blue Jays looking into a few players that were recently non-tendered
Relief pitcher Hoby Milner is a solid option that could come with a low risk high reward as he is coming off an rough season in 2024 with a 4.73 ERA but has been better in the past as is expected to sign for around $1.5 million.
With the ability to pitch multiple innings, Milner could help the Blue Jays bullpen in a few ways. It's the Tim Mayza role - sometimes targeting tough lefties late in tight games, sometimes cleaning up a starter's mess in the fifth or sixth before coming back out for another inning. On a one-year, $1.5 million deal, it wouldn't take much for Milner to return value. -Zwelling
Kyle Finnegan is another player that could certainly help the bullpen as he is coming off a 38 save season in which he was voted an all-star but for some reason was non-tendered by the Nationals, shocking a ton of fans.
While Finnegan would cost a lot more than Milner, he would also be a much more reliable option.
The right-hander certainly has late-game stuff with a 97 m.p.h. fastball that regularly touches 99, a diving splitter, and a slider he throws to righties. But for one reason or another hitters tend to see his stuff well, which is why Finnegan only had a 22 per cent strikeout rate over the last two seasons while allowing the second-highest hard-hit rate of any qualified reliever. Likely why the Nationals passed on the $8.6 million he was projected to earn via arbitration thanks to accumulating all those saves. -Zwelling
Jacob Webb could also be a great stable option for the Blue Jays as he has posted a 3.34 ERA over the last two season with 115 strikeouts in 110.1 innings pitched in 2023 and 2024.
Webb's been a perfectly serviceable reliever over the last two seasons, pitching to a 3.34 ERA with 115 strikeouts over 110.1 innings. But there are a couple of red flags behind his results. His 12.2 per cent walk rate over that span is well above league average and he missed six weeks this summer with right elbow inflammation. Steamer projects him to regress rather dramatically in 2025 to a 4.29 ERA. -Zwelling
Outside of pitchers, there is also Austin Hays, Mike Tauchman and Josh Rojas that could also be very interesting for the Blue Jays to sign this off-season.
