Nathan Lukes who played in 29 games last year with the big club has been known for his left-handed hitting prowess. He demonstrates the ability to play all three outfield positions, proving to be the much-needed depth the Jays need, considering their injuries. Though, the Jays have decided to send him down to start the season in the minors. A very surprising move, that shocked many - considering his impressive play in spring training. In 14 games and 40 plate appearances, he has an outstanding .444 BA and a 1.085 OPS.

Last season, Lukes secured a spot with the Blue Jays out of spring training, a move that caught some by surprise. His playing time was limited, mostly serving as a defensive substitute. Throughout the season, he was sent down and called up on multiple occasions. He struggled offensively from the left side, hitting .190, with a .290 OBP and 2 RBI's.
The Blue Jays are sending him down give him regular playing time, when the time comes, they hope that he can translate his performance from the minors to the majors. In 2022, he was named the MVP of the Buffalo Bisons and last year despite his limited opportunities in the majors, in 48 games and 222 plate appearances, he boasted a remarkable batting average of .366, coupled with an on-base percentage of .423 and a slugging percentage of .530, which included five home runs.
Spencer Horwitz, now 26, is no longer eligible to be part of the team's top prospect list, though last year in 2023 he was among the top, ranked 13 out of 40. The 24th round pick of the 2019 draft has played well with his time in Buffalo, hitting .337/.450/.495 with 10 home runs in 107 games.
This spring training has really shown that he may not be ready for the big leagues. The first basemen had only five hits in 44 appearances, accumulated a stat line of .135/.273/.162. That being said, with Horwitz only being able to play limited positions and the Jays already having their star at first with Vladimir Guerrero Jr, the decisions in combination of poor play was clear for management.
Both have a chance of filling a roster spot throughout the season, though it looks more promising for Lukes. Strong play in the minors will force the Jays hand at giving them both a shot.
