The Toronto Blue Jays have been in contract negotiations with Vladimir Guerrero Jr for the majority of the off-season but have been unable to agree on a number and it looks like things are expected to get worse.

The Blue Jays have been said to have made three offers to Guerrero so far this off-season but all of them have been under $400 million which is at least $50 million away for the minimum he is expecting to sign for.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr expected to reject the Blue Jays $400 million offer

The Blue Jays and Guerrero have been quite far apart on getting a contract extension done since he knows that he could be getting a lot more than they are offering if he waits until free agency.
ESPN's Paul Hembekides recently stated that the Blue Jays will be making Guerrero a $400 million offer before the start of Spring Training but that Guerrero will reject it since he will be able to get almost $100 million more in free agency.
«Feb. 18. That is Toronto's first full-squad workout, and more importantly, the self-imposed deadline for extension talks between Vlad Jr. and the organization,» Hembekides wrote. «The Blue Jays must pay up to retain their homegrown star - they'll offer him a $400 million extension within the next month, but he'll reject their overtures and chase free agency instead." -Hembekides

The majority of reporters believes that if Guerrero waits until free agency next winter, he will be the top free agent on the market and will attract a contract of over $500 million since teams like the Boston Red Sox and New York Mets are interested.
By fielding offers from the likes of the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox and New York Mets in addition to the Blue Jays, he might see his next contract reach the $500 million mark, particularly as stars like Juan Soto and Shohei Ohtani have reached $700 million totals in recent years. -Chawaga

The Blue Jays recent addition on Anthony Santander and possibly landing Pete Alonso would definitely help persuade Guerrero to stay for under $500 million but the chances of them signing him for under $450 million are very slim.
If Ross Atkins is serious about keeping Guerrero in Toronto, he simply needs to make him an offer at his asking price and get it signed.
Hopefully the Blue Jays do not miss out on Guerrero as the fan base will be crushed to see him go.
