The Toronto Blue Jays are set to take on the Baltimore Orioles on Opening Day and despite it looking like Jose Berrios will get the start, it seems like things might have changed.
Blue Jays manager John Schneider recently spoke on how the team has yet to make the decision but many thought that Berrios would get the start once again as he was the starter on Opening Day last year.
Blue Jays might end up having Kevin Gausman on the mound instead of Jose Berrios on Opening Day
Berrios is coming off a better season than Gausman and numbers wise was the Blue Jays best pitcher in 2024 but that does not mean much since their entire rotation had a tough season.
Gausman was actually supposed to get the start last year on Opening Day but they ended up giving it to
Berrios because Gausman was still dealing with a shoulder injury.
Last season, all signs pointed to Gausman making his first Opening Day start as a Blue Jay since he was coming off a fantastic 2023 season where he finished third in CY Young voting. However, he experienced some shoulder fatigue in spring training, which opened the door for Berríos to make the start. -Sankar
Since Gausman is still considered the Blue Jays best pitcher at least for right now despite how last season went, many believe that he will get the start against the Orioles since he was supposed to last season but ended up missing out.
Since Gausman was unable to make the Opening Day start last year, we think there is a solid chance that he'll take the mound on Opening Day against his former team. -Sankar
Gausman has stated throughout Spring Training that he is highly motivated to have a bounce back year in 2025 which is why he put on some weight this off-season and has been working on multiple pitches.
Despite whoever gets the ball on Opening Day, the Blue Jays starting rotation is definitely a lot better heading into the 2025 season with the addition of Max Scherzer and Bowden Francis.
