The Toronto Blue Jays are preparing for the final two weeks of spring training which may have infielder Will Wagner on the outside looking in as he is currently on the bubble of several players who may not making the roster for Opening Day.
Despite the organization having high expectations and hopes that Wagner will be a fixture on the Blue Jays roster, it's becoming clear that the team is struggling to find him a position. Wagner had shown promise after coming over from last year's trade deadline and played 24 games with the team.
Wagner trying to stand out amongst many who want a roster spot
As of now, he is only hitting .214 across five games and 14 at-bats, with just three hits to his name (two doubles). Again, that's not exactly a good sample size to judge off for the long run, especially with the amount of people fighting for roster spots. Matthew Spagnuolo
John Schneider said you could see Will Wagner playing some 1B this season. Wagner getting some intel from Don Mattingly.
Wagner has several players to contend with including Orelvis Martinez, Davis Schneider, Ernie Clement, all who are competing for a spot which bodes well for the organization as it shows depth despite many feeling they are lacking.
Blue Jays have options for Wagner if unabke to secure a spot
If Wagner is unable to find a roster spot, it's likely he will be sent down to the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons where he can continue to develop his game and play on a regular basis hoping for an opportunity that will present itself with the Blue Jays.
The 26-year-old was drafted by the Houston Astros in 2021, 18th round 538th overall. Last season, he played 24 games for the Blue Jays with 82 at bats with 2 HR, 11 RBI and an OPS of .788.
Wagner along with Joey Loperfido and Jake Bloss were traded from the Houston Astros to the Blue Jays in exchange for pitcher Yusei Kikuchi.
The Blue Jays will continue Grapefruit League as they will be at home in Dunedin Florida against the Houston Astros and game time will be 10:07 AM on March 10th.
