The Toronto Blue Jays organization is preparing for spring training and there is hope that their top pitching prospect Ricky Tiedemann will return later this year to the mound after undergoing Tommy John surgery.
Bounce Back Candidate: Ricky Tiedemann.
The Blue Jays have high expectations for the South paw as Ben Weinrib of MLB.com that lists him as part of the top 15 prospects that will bounce back from their injury.
Tiedemann pegged in the top 100 prospects of 2025
Tiedemann was ranked as the top left-handed pitching prospect in baseball entering the 2024 campaign. He then made just eight starts on the season - four of which were on rehab assignments - going 0-1 with a 5.19 ERA, 1.673 WHIP and 14 strikeouts per nine innings. Sam Connon
Tiedemann was a third-round pick in the 2021 entry draft for the Blue Jays.

He went 5-4 with a 2.17 ERA, 0.864 WHIP and 13.4 strikeouts per nine innings, going from Single-A to High-A to Double-A in 2022, then posted an 0-5 record, 3.68 ERA, 1.227 WHIP and 16.8 strikeouts per nine innings across Rookie Ball, Single-A, Double-A and Triple-A in 2023. At the 2023 Arizona Fall League, Tiedemann was 2-1 with a 2.50 ERA, 1.111 WHIP and 11.5 strikeouts per nine innings. Sam Connon
Blue Jays banking on his return to form
Barring any setbacks, the Blue Jays hope that Tiedemann can find his form again and become a starter for the Blue Jays within the next year or two. The team has gone ahead and signed Max Scherzer and also has older pictures like Chris Bassitt who will see his contract end in 2026.
Having a young pitcher like Tiedemann gives your team flexibility, control of his salary for several seasons especially if he can put up great numbers.
It remains to be seen on how well he will recover from his surgery but if all goes well, he will likely see time in Buffalo and potentially see some time with the majors but that's still far off from now.
The Blue Jays will see their first game spring training on February 22nd when they will face off against the New York Yankees. It will stretch from the 22nd of February all the way till the 23rd of March.
