The Toronto Blue Jays are in a very strange spot right now with Max Scherzer as they are not sure when or if he will be able to return which is why there is some interest in free agent Spencer Turnbull.
Blue Jays could look to replace Max Scherzer with free agent Spencer Turnbull
The Blue Jays expect Scherzer to return in the near future since he will not be getting surgery but since this is an on going issue, this might not be the only time he is headed to IL this season.
MLB reporter Jesse Courville-Lynch believes that the Blue Jays should look at signing Jesse Turnbull who is still a free agent and coming off a great season in 2024 where he finished with a 2.65 ERA.
Scherzer will not need surgery and is expected to return eventually. FanSided's Jesse Courville-Lynch urged the team to sign veteran free agent Spencer Turnbull. Turnbull can start games and be an asset out of the bullpen. Last season, he appeared in 17 games, starting seven, for the Philadelphia Phillies and had a 2.65 ERA. -Mohammed
Turnbull could help with the Blue Jays current starting rotation issues while Scherzer is out but even once he returns he could be a huge help in the bullpen since he has experience in both spots.
"And Turnbull could be valuable even when Scherzer returns," wrote Courville-Lynch. "A pitcher who is coming off of a strong season and would likely sign for cheap is always an enticing free agent. He may not be a long-term solution to the bullpen depth or the future of the rotation, but he'd be a helpful arm to have in the fold for 2025." -Courville-Lynch
This could be a very interesting option for the Blue Jays who are currently dealing with a ton of injured pitchers and lack depth at the position which is why Turnbull would be a good option.
It will be interesting to see how all of this plays out in the coming days.
