The Toronto Blue Jays are looking at a ton of different options for their infield in 2025 and it looks like they have some serious interest in third baseman Yoan Moncada.
The Blue Jays have to find a solution for their infield for their infield before the start of the season as they have no real second baseman unless they acquire a third baseman and move Ernie Clement over to second base.
The Blue Jays are interested in free agent third baseman Yoan Moncada
Third baseman Yoan Moncada has been with the Chicago White Sox for his entire career up until 2024 but became a free agent when the White Sox decided to buy out his club option releasing him into free agency.
Yoan Moncada's eight-season run with the White Sox ended when Chicago bought out its club option on the infielder's contract in October, sending Moncada into free agency. -Polishuk
According to reporter Francys Romero, Moncada is generating quite a bit off interests from multiple teams this off-season including the Toronto Blue Jays which is surprising with his recent decline and injury troubles in recent years.
Though Moncada's last three seasons have been defined by injuries, reporter Francys Romero (via X) writes that «Moncada is generating a lot of interest in the market,» and that the Blue Jays are ones of the clubs interested in the 29-year-old's services. -Polishuk
Sources: Yoan Moncada is generating a lot of interest in the market. The Toronto Blue Jays is one of the teams with real interest right now.
While the Blue Jays would benefit from brigning in a third baseman and moving Clement over to second, Moncada comes with a ton of risks as he has failed to play a full season since 2021 and last year only played 12 games.
Moncada has not had a solid season since 2019 where he hit 25 homeruns to go along with a .315 batting average as he has been on the decline ever since.
It isn't surprising that Moncada's production nosedived in the wake of all these injuries, as he has hit only .236/.291/.387 in 835 PA over the last three seasons. He played for Cuba during the Premier12 tournament in November to get some extra playing time in the wake of his lost 2024 season, though he hit just .143 over 14 at-bats. -Polishuk
This move would be incredibly risky for the Blue Jays since it cculd end up vbeing money down the drain if Moncada just ends up on IL as he has in the past few seasons.
