Spring Training is in full gear and grapefruit league games taking place, it appears that National League owner Steve Cohen of the New York Mets may be preparing a monster offer 4 Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
Cohen, who was instrumental in plucking former New York Yankees superstar Juan Soto from free agency that he has his sights now turned to Guerrero Jr as he continues to flaunt his riches and attempts to build a super team.
Blue Jays may be no match for Cohen's offer
MLB networks reporter Matt Vasgersian explains that the Blue Jays are facing a tall order to sign Guerrero junior as Cohen wants to make his mark in baseball.
«It all goes back to Steve Cohen because there was the outlandish sum of money given to Juan Soto, «But he's looming as probably the best candidate to give Vlad an outlandish sum of money when he chooses to test the free agent market. So the Blue Jays are really up against it.» Matt Vasgersian
«Vladimir Guerrero Jr. turned down a lot of money I do think Juan Soto
changed the dynamics.»
Buster Olney of ESPN baseball tonight feels that the Blue Jays should pick up the phone and apologize to Guerrero junior & him right away to keep the face of the franchise and help build around him.
«They should pick up the phone today and say, 'You know what? That number you asked for last week and we said no to? Forget all that, we're sorry, yes, we're going to give it to you now,'» he said. «In this case, there is a takedown number. You get to keep a player who was born in Canada and there's value in that in itself in building a beachhead going forward.» Buster Olney
Spring Training continues with uncertainty looming for the Blue Jays
Despite all the negativity surrounding this subject, the Blue Jays continued to push forward in spring training as the team lost their first game in grapefruit league to the Philadelphia Phillies 9-6 at TD Ballpark in Dunedin Florida.
Steve Cohen was asked about Vladimir Guerrero Jr. turning down an extension with the Blue Jays: "I'll let my baseball people make that decision."
Manager John Schneider along with the rest of his staff are trying to keep the men focused as many prepare for Opening Day which is several weeks away. The Blue Jays would like to start off hot and build and compete against the other American League East teams.
But much will need to go right in order for that to happen and it remains to be seen on how the team will fare against their opponents and where they will sit in the standings prior to the July trade deadline.
For Guerrero Jr, all he must do is play baseball and play it well and he will have a very large check at the end of this season regardless of which team it will be.
