Toronto Blue Jays superstar Vladimir Guerrero Jr is headed into the last year of his contract and it looks like he might refuse an extension to test free agency next year similar to what Aaron Judge did in 2022.
Blue Jays fans desperately want the Guerrero to be extended this off-season and at first he was vocal about wanting to stay in Toronto but it looks like he might be interested in testing the market next winter.
Blue Jays superstar Vladimir Guerrero Jr ready to test free agency next season
As things continue to drag on, Guerrero might end up going the same route as Yankees captain Aaron Judge who ended up testing the free agent market in 2022 before ultimately return to New York. Guerrero waiting to see how much Soto signs for and where might also be a good decision since it will definitely impact the size of Guerrero's next contract.
Like Judge in 2022, the four-time All-Star baseman is a year away from free agency and sure to get an extension offer from the club at some point, meaning he'll have to weigh a similar same-risk reward equation. He may also want to wait for Soto to further drive up prices for generational talents, and the outfielder's next contract may be relevant given their ages and some of the statistical similarities through their first five-plus big-league years. -Davidi
While Guerrero might end up testing the market, this does not mean that he will not be returning to Toronto especially if the team has a great season in 2025 which so many are hoping for. He has stated in the past that he would like to retire a Blue Jay but that does not mean he is not willing to explore other options as well.
Waiting to test next years free agent market would be a risky decision for Guerrero since he would be betting on his 2025 season but could end up being extremely lucrative.
