It appears the Toronto Blue Jays have strong interest in signing former New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso as he has declined a three-year offer.

Anthony Franco of MLB Trade Rumors has stated that Alonso's camp has indicated that he intends to sign elsewhere after declining a three-year deal from the Mets.

Blue Jays could land a major upgrade in Alonso

Other baseball pundits including Joel Sherman and Dan Martin of the New York Post gave more specifics on what Alonso had passed up on. The Mets offered an overall guarantee between 68 and $70 million which also included opt outs in his contract.

The 30-year-old Alonso was drafted by the New York Mets, in the second round in the 2016 MLB June amateur draft from the University of Florida. Last year's stats showed that he had 34 home runs along with 88 RBI's and OBP of .329 and OPS of .788

It was also mentioned by the Athletic that the Blue Jays were engaged with Alonso's camp as the Blue Jays management in general manager Ross Atkins and President Mark Shapiro tries to silence their critics as the team's off season has been very quiet beside signing Vladimir Guerrero Jr's one year extension.
The Athletic reported this morning that the Blue Jays were among the teams still engaged with Alonso's camp. It's not clear whether those discussions also involve a short-term deal. Anthony Franco MLB trade Rumors

The Blue Jays need changes to their lineup including an improvement in their in field to which Alonso would give them that upgrade. Likely, if a deal were to take place Guerrero Jr would head over to third base and Alonso would take over first.
