The Toronto Blue Jays are attempting to improve their roster while trying to sign Vladimir Guerrero Jr to a long-term deal which may lead to a trade of Blue Jays leadoff hitter George Springer to the Kansas City Royals.

Short on already a very notable comment by John Schneider about the Jays lineup being essentially wide open right now. Let's start here: This is primarily about George Springer. Here's what he's done out of the leadoff spot over the last 4 seasons...

Heading to Brayden Haena of Clutchpoints, a hypothetical trade option appeared that would see Springer head to the Royals in exchange for starter Kris Bubic and reliever Chris Stratton along with the Jays eating some of Springer's salary to sweeten the deal.

Springer has not lived up to his contract for the Blue Jays

"For Toronto, moving Springer opens up a spot in the outfield, allowing a young infielder to transition there. More importantly, it frees up salary flexibility while addressing their bullpen depth-an area that has been a weakness in recent years.

"For Kansas City, this deal provides an upgrade to their outfield, a veteran presence in the clubhouse, and a proven postseason performer. If the Royals are serious about competing in the AL Central, acquiring Springer at a discounted price could help their lineup without sacrificing too much talent." Brayden Haena
Four years ago, the Toronto Blue Jays agreed to a six-year, $150-million contract with outfielder George Springer. It remains the largest contract (in terms of total financial commitment) in Blue Jays' franchise history.

Moving Springer also would open the outfield as manager John Schneider would be able to shift around a few players to fill in Springer's spot.

Atkins states any improvement will come through trade

During a press conference last week, general manager Ross Atkins stated that the Blue Jays would improve their roster through trade rather than signing free agents as many of the best free agents have been signed to other teams.
Moving Springer would be a prudent action even if the Blue Jays have to eat a little money to make it happen as his injuries have kept him making a great impact long term with the Blue Jays with his contract.
The Royals also have trouble in their outfield so adding a player like Springer could certainly improve their team.
With Opening day several weeks away, Atkins has time to adjust his roster.
