It was revealed on Monday evening that former Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Tim Mayza has been acquired and signed a Major League deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates pending a physical.

Pirates To Sign Tim Mayza

Mayza had been with the Blue Jays organization since 2013 when he was drafted by the team but made his debut back in 2017. During his time are the Blue Jays mound he had become the Blue Jays best left-handed reliever as he posted a 2.67 ERA along with a 3.20 FIP in 155 innings from 2021 through 2023.

When he returned, Mayza became the best left-handed relief pitcher in the Jays organization, posting a 2.67 ERA and a 3.20 FIP in 155 innings pitched from 2021 until 2023. The 2023 season was an especially good season for Mayza, finishing with a 1.52 ERA and a 2.60 FIP in 53.1 innings pitched, allowing just two home runs all season. - Ryley Delaney Bluejaysnation

His fortunes turned sharply last year. Mayza took the ball for the Jays 35 times. Opponents blitzed him for more than eight earned runs per nine innings. His strikeout rate plummeted to 13.2%, while the ground-balls fell to a modest 39.1% rate. There weren't many signs of encouragement in either the results nor the underlying profile. Mayza became a New York Yankee on July 12th after signing a minor league deal as he was released from the Blue Jays after his terrible season in 2024. He found himself in the World Series as he was on the roster but the Yankees ended up losing in five games to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Blue Jays looking for help in their pitching

It has not been a secret that general manager Ross Atkins his attempting to improve his pitching staff as there is a need for better relievers and one more potential starting pitcher. Many feel that the Blue Jays would move Yariel Rodriguez to the relief position if the Jays are able to acquire a starter.
Sources confirm LHP Tim Mayza has signed a one-year, $1.15 million deal

There have been a few names attached to the Blue Jays including free agents Nick Pivetta and Max Scherzer and it remains to be seen on whether the team can lock them into a deal.
But it's safe to say, many hope that Mayza has a better season this year as he had been a long-standing Blue Jay as he now works in the National League.
