According to an MLB Draft lottery simulator released today on social media, the Toronto Blue Jays are projected to pick 1st overall in the 2025 MLB Draft.
For those who do not know how the MLB Draft lottery works, Yahoo Sports provides a very good explanation to the entire process.
The draft's order used to be based purely on the regular-season standings. But in addition to adding the draft lottery, the league recently switched to determining the non-lottery draft order by postseason finish. That means the World Series champion Texas Rangers are set to pick 30th, rather than the 104-win Atlanta Braves.

The main idea has been to disincentivize bottom of the barrel teams to play worse on purpose, essentially tanking in order to improve their draft position. This has been adopted many many of the major sports leagues as well and has proven to be fair.
The draft lottery disincentivizes teams from being the worst in the league, particularly multiple years in a row. That said, receiving a top draft pick for a bad year was nice, but it was arguably a perk that came with the primary motive of cutting salary to the bone.
In summary, it is only the second year that the MLB is utilizing this new draft program, so it is still up in there on how well it works for the MLB. Last year the Pittsburgh Pirates increased their draft stick from 3rd to 1st and the Detroit Tigers went from position 6 to 3.
No doubt about it, there will be winners and losers when it comes to the lottery, but its keeps the game fair and in a better state. And for us Blue Jays fans, according to a recent simulator, there will be picking first!
