The Toronto Blue Jays continues to evaluate their talent as Grapefruit League continues and spring training is in full swing. It appears however that three Blue Jays hopefuls are hurting their value with less than adequate performance this spring training.
OFFICIAL: We've acquired OF RJ Schreck from the Mariners in exchange for INF Justin Turner and cash considerations.
These players along with the rest of spring training have an opportunity to land a role full time with the team as several key areas need an overhaul or an upgrade which gives players a chance to snag a position.
RJ Shreck needs to step up his play to make the team
Outfielder RJ Shreck has been noticed as a player that has not stepped up his game in an effort to show the coaching staff that he is ready for a full-time job.
Shreck is coming off a solid 2024 minor league campaign in which he posted a .251 average and .851 OPS to go along with 69 runs scored, 29 doubles, 17 home runs, 63 RBI and 13 stolen bases in 114 games between the Jays and Seattle Mariners' organizations. Edward Eng
He faces competition from Alan Roden and Myles Straw Who have been quite noticeable with their offense well Shreck has only gone 2 for 10 through 5 games of Grapefruit League.
Yariel Rodriguez has had tough start to Spring Training
Many in baseball and the Blue Jays organization felt that 27-year-old Yariel Rodriguez would be a lock for the starting rotation prior to Max Scherzer being signed.
That thinking has now shifted and it's likely he will be placed in the bullpen but over his last number of trips to the mound, he has struggled with his game.
He has a 3.00 WHIP, and has allowed five hits and walked four while striking out just three. The most worrisome part of his struggles has been his lack of command, which was something that popped up from time-to-time last year. Edward Eng
Leo Jiminez has been flat throughout Spring Training
Lastly, many pundits have noticed that Leo Jiminez does not appear to be enjoying his spring training as his game has suffered and his performance dismal. He has gone 0 for 7 and has had two strikeouts.
If any of these players wish to join the Blue Jays full time, all will have to find a better way to bring their compete level up and show the coaching staff that they are wanting to be there in playing the hardest they can's Opening Day is less than one month away.
