The Toronto Blue Jays are still looking to close a deal with Vladimir Guerrero Jr before the deadline but it looks like if they cannot get a deal done they will still not be looking to trade him.
The Blue Jays apparently have no plan to trade Vladimir Guerrero Jr even if they are unable to re-sign him
Guerrero has a certain asking price that he is looking for and he made it clear earlier this off-season that if he does not get that number by the first day of Spring Training, he will be waiting until next off-season to sign a new deal.
The Blue Jays only have a week left to negotiate but according to reports they have no interest in trading Guerrero even if they end up being unable to get a deal done before the deadline.
Guerrero has established a firm deadline of February 18 for contract extension discussions, or he'll head into free agency. With teams like the Yankees and Red Sox poised to make competitive offers, the Blue Jays have made it clear they are not open to trading him, despite potential concerns over a costly extension. -BVM
This would be a dangerous move since Guerrero will be the best player on the free agent market next off-season and will attract a ton of attention from some major teams which means the Blue Jays could end up with nothing.
While the Blue Jays are committed to keeping Guerrero, there are potential risks involved, including the possibility of losing him to free agency without compensation. If they refuse to negotiate, they could miss the chance to receive valuable trade assets should he choose to test the market. -BVM
If the Blue Jays miss out on getting a deal done, the smart decision would be to start listening to trade offers as they would still be able to make him an offer next off-season but it seems like Atkins has no interest in that.
It will be interesting to see what happens in the next week as the Blue Jays are running out of time.
