The Blue Jays had a decent off-season bringing in some solid new pieces but their biggest mistake was not getting a deal done with Guerrero since
they could end up losing their best player and now they also have to deal with contract talk all year.
The Blue Jays are in a tough spot due to the Vladimir Guerrero Jr negotiations
In a recent report, MLB reporter Jeff Blair stated that he believes the Blue Jays made a massive mistake in not signing Guerrero, not only because he is their best player but because of how big of a distraction it will be for the team this season.
The question now is how does this get handled because Guerrero is going to get asked THE QUESTION every first day of every road series and during the All-Star Game and then it will be the manager and his teammates and - holy hell - just wait until it gets to September and he's still here. -Blair
And listen, I've been clear: I cannot believe that this front office let this situation get away from them. I can see where they would get all knotted up trying to figure out who the real Guerrero is and maybe even a little scared knowing they would be establishing an industry standard for first basemen. -Blair
Blair believes the Blue Jays best chance now at signing
Guerrero is waiting for the competing offers to come in this off-season and make sure to outbid them but that will mean that they will likely overpay.
But litigating the past is a time-suck. It is what it is and we are where we are and I still don't think it's out of the question that the Blue Jays sign Guerrero in the off-season once the market is set by the Yankees or New York Mets or Washington Nationals or someone else. -Blair
Clearly Ross Atkins and Mark Shapiro went about this situation in the worst possible way and now the team will suffer from it.
Not only will the entire team have to deal with the media asking questions about Guerrero's free agency all season but if they do end up keeping him, they will be paying much more than if they just gave him his asking price this winter.
