Spring training continues to roll on as the Blue Jays organization evaluates its depth and talent and appears to be looking for another bat after their failed attempt to sign several high-profile free agents during the offseason.
Look, if the Blue Jays committed $9.3 million to Brandon Belt and $13 million to Justin Turner, there should be nothing stopping them from doing the same for J.D. Martinez.
It's been reported that the Blue Jays may be interested in former New York Mets designated hitter J.D. Martinez after the team had decided to let Brandon belt and Justin Turner go and still has left the position up in the air.
Martinez would provide veteran presence for Blue Jays
The 37-year-old designated hitter has been successful at the position as he has transitioned from a regular hitter and providing a team with 40 or more home runs a year.
JD Martinez hits a solo shot (25) to cut the Blue Jays lead down to 4-3.
His 2023 season with the Los Angeles Dodgers was his best since 2019, as Martinez slashed .271/.321/.572 with 33 home runs in 479 plate appearances for a 135 wRC+ and a 2.4 fWAR. It wasn't a perfect season by any means, as his 31.1 K% was worrisome, but it was a good season for him. Ryley Delaney
Considering his numbers are still decent for his age, he would be a decent choice to sign to a one-year deal and give the Jays more batting power as this is one of the areas they have been lacking.
Signing Martinez would prevent Blue Jays losing an asset
General manager Ross Atkins had told the media two weeks ago that the Blue Jays would likely bolster the lineup through trade rather than signing free agents.
Despite that claim, it's safe to say that if a free agent where to cross his path such as Martinez, he would likely be a lower cost option and would not take away any assets like prospects.
Anthony Santander is back at camp after taking a few days off to take care of visa issues.
Some pundits feel that the Blue Jays could sign him for less than $12 million for
one year and that would give them a bat that would be reliable and helpful as the team continues to fill out its roster.
The Blue Jays will be on a double header As they will take on the tigers at TD ballpark and then head over to play the New York Yankees. Game one will be at 1:07 PM and Game 2 will be at 6:35 PM on February 28th.
