During yesterday's press conference, Toronto Blue Jays CEO Mark Shapiro seem to have taken some unwarranted shots at superstar Vladimir Guerrero.
Guerrero is headed into the last year of his current contract and fans were hoping to get a confirmation at the press conference yesterday that the team is currently looking to lock him up for the long run before next season begins.
Unfortunately, the discussion regarding Guerrero started off with Shapiro stating that he basically does not believe Guerrero is a generational player but that he is still very good.
Asked whether Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is a generational player, Mark Shapiro said Vlad Jr. is a great offensive talent.
"I don't know, generational player ... he certainly has the opportunity to be a generational player."
Fans believe this is Shapiro's terrible way of not showing his entire hand as this is part of his negotiations but it seems as though all this did was insult Guerrero.
I totally get that Mark doesn't want to show his hand and rightly so, but I don't think there's any chance that Vladdy is signing an extension this offseason. #BlueJays
If you're Vlad Guerrero Jr. (30-HR, 166 OPS+, 2nd 6+ WAR season by age 25) & you hear that Mark Shapiro stopped short of calling you a generational player when asked, how does that land? Shapiro did acknowledge Vlad Jr.'s offensive ability, but not a ringing endorsement overall.
Then Atkins added that the Blue Jays still have Guerrero this upcoming season and that signing an extension is a worry of the future despite many believing that they should do it as soon as possible.
Clearly the Blue Jays won't be singing Guerrero before free agency as many hoped but it is not off the the board just yet.
