The Toronto Blue Jays were unable to reach a contract extension with Vladimir Guerrero Jr which most do not understand how since they have known his closing number since the start.

Last week, Guerrero came out and stated that he would love to stay in Toronto but as of right now the two parties are still very far apart on a contract extension number which is why he has decided to enter free agency next off-season.

Buster Olney rips into the Blue Jays for not getting a deal done with Vladimir Guerrero Jr

MLB insider Buster Olney stated during a recent interview that he does not understand why the Blue Jays have yet to lock up Guerrero since they know he wants to stay while adding that keeping him should be their main priority after missing out on Juan Soto and Shohei Ohtani.
With Guerrero, there is no question whether he would sign to play in Toronto, as there was with Ohtani and Soto; Guerrero has played with the Jays his entire career, and says he wants to continue playing in Toronto. -Olney

Olney also added that the Blue Jays actually know how much Guerrero is looking for and have no competition for the moment which is why they should just make him the right offer to keep him in Toronto.
In Guerrero's case, there is a take-down number. As he said last week after the negotiations stalled, 'I have my number.' The Jays know that number, in a way they didn't know it with Ohtani and Soto and many other stars who've refused to take their money in recent winters. -Olney

Despite Guerrero stating that he does not want to negotiate throughout the season, he made it clear that if the Blue Jays come to him with a real offer he would be willing to sign.
«I won't close the door, if it's a realistic offer.»

After this statement and the fact that the Blue Jays have missed out on an incredible amount of top free agents over the past few years, it does not make sense that they would risk losing Guerrero, a player who has made it clear he wants to stay in Toronto.
At this point, if a deal does not get done, Blue Jays fans only have Ross Atkins and Mark Shapiro to blame.
