Jordan Romano takes shots at the Blue Jays front office during press conference
The Blue Jays decided to non-tender Romano last November right before the deadline as they believed that his projected $8.5 million was too much risk for a pitcher they were uncertain about.
Romano had his first press conference as a member of the Phillies today via zoom in which he stated that he was surprised by the Blue Jays decision to non-tender him last month.
The former Blue Jays closer added that after surgery last season, the plan with the team was to properly recover and only comeback in 2025 as they did not want to rush his recovery.
In Jordan Romano's introductory #Phillies zoom with media, he described being non-tendered by #BlueJays as "surprising."
Romano acknowledged the plan last season (after elbow surgery), "was never to come back at the end of the year," but rather take the time to build back up.
Clearly Romano was shocked by the decision and is still upset after he was blindsided by Ross Atkins decision to non-tender him this off-season when the plan was for him to take his time recovering.
This likely also hits Romano a bit harder since he is a Toronto Native and has spent his entire career with the Blue Jays organization.
At least he will not get a chance to be on an incredible team with the Phillies and has a chance at going deep in the playoffs pretty much every year.
