Incredible announcement made regarding Toronto Blue Jays reliever Paxton Schultz
Starter Easton Lucas had a rough outing on Sunday, surrendering six earned runs on seven hits over just 1 2/3 innings in an 8-3 loss to the Seattle Mariners at home.
Manager John Schneider decided to take the 28-year-old out early and turned to the bullpen, giving the ball to recently called-up
Paxton Schultz for his MLB debut.
Blue Jays reliever Paxton Schultz matches an MLB record for most strikeouts by a reliever in their major league debut, fanning eight batters over 4 1/3 scoreless innings while giving up only two hits.
Brad Wakai from the Toronto Blue Jays On Si writes that Schultz was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 14th round in 2019, he was later sent to the Toronto Blue Jays in May 2021 as the "player to be named later" in the trade involving Derek Fisher.
"Schultz has been solid during his minor league career with a 4.48 ERA across his 130 appearances and 70 starts, but nobody expected him to make Major League history when he debuted." -Wakai
He was actually more of a footnote in Sunday's roster announcements, which were headlined by Dillon Tate's promotion.
It remains to be seen how long Schultz will stay in Toronto, but making history in his MLB debut is certainly an impressive way to introduce himself as the newest Blue Jays pitcher.
The Blue Jays kick off a three game series against the Astros in Houstan on Monday night. They'll look to get back in the winning column after losing their last two games to Seattle.
