The Chicago Cubs announced this morning that they have agreed to a contract with former Toronto Blue Jays relief pitcher Trevor Richards.
The Blue Jays acquired Richards as part of the deal that landed Bowden Francis from the Milwaukee Brewers and they ended up moving him at the trade deadline last year to the Minnesota Twins for Jay Harry.
Former Blue Jays pitcher Trevor Richards sign with the Cubs
The Cubs announced this morning that they have signed former Blue Jays relief pitcher Trevor Richards to a minor league deal that will also include a major league Spring Training invite.
SIGNING: The Chicago Cubs have signed RHP Trevor Richards for their bullpen.
The 31 y/o stands at 6'2, 205lb. Last year with the Blue Jays and Twins, he was 2-2 with 65.1 IP and 62 SO.
Help us welcome Trevor to Chicago!
The #Cubs have agreed to terms with free-agent RHP Trevor Richards on a minor-league contract, per @AramLeighton8
Richards had a solid season in 2024 split between the Twins and Blue Jays as he finished with a 4.55 ERA along with 49 strike outs in 65.1 innings pitched with a 2-2 record on the season.
The fact that Richards was unable to land a major league contract is somewhat surprising but there is a good chance he spends the majority of the season in the MLB even if he starts off in the minors.
This is a good risk by the Cubs as Richards has solid numbers throughout his career and signing him to a minor league deal means they can only benefit from this.
Richards did not spend a lot of time in Toronto but was one of their decent relievers during a season that their bullpen was atrocious.
