In his third appearance this season, Gausman, who had only one spring outing, struggled, conceding six runs on 10 hits in just 3 2/3 innings during a 12-4 defeat to the Colorado Rockies.
Blue Jays reliever Paolo Espino had to replace a once again struggling Kevin Gausman on Friday, but he didn't do much better himself. He gave up four runs on six hits, including a solo home run.
In his last outing against the Yankees, Gausman's velocity notably declined. Six days later, while the speed on his fastball and splitter returned, he left too many hittable pitches up in the zone.
Gausman's velocity returned, but the effectiveness and placement of his pitches didn't follow suit. Once again, the Blue Jays right-hander found himself exiting the game prematurely for the second start in a row.
It may be that he may not be fully back from his injury, or it could be the fact he didn't have enough time to prepare without having spring training, but the Jays Ace is not performing to high enough standards.
