Toronto Blue Jays receive exciting update on injured star outfielder
The Toronto Blue Jays received a positive update Friday on injured outfielder Daulton Varsho, who is nearing his season debut.
Daulton Varsho is set to begin a rehab assignment with Single-A Dunedin this weekend. He's expected to appear in a couple of games there before moving on to Triple-A Buffalo for about five more games as he continues his recovery.
Tyler Maher from the Toronto Blue Jays On Si writes that if all goes according to plan and Varsho avoids any setbacks during his rehab assignment, he's on pace to rejoin the Blue Jays by the end of the month, likely in a series against either the Yankees or Red Sox.
That's big news for Toronto, as they've been without Varsho all season. He hasn't played since undergoing rotator cuff surgery last September, which led to him starting the 2025 campaign on the injured list.
"The 28-year-old outfielder has been sensational for Toronto since coming over in a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks following the 2022 season. After a strong 2023, he won his first Gold Glove and set a career-high with 5.0 WAR in 2024 despite missing the last few weeks of the season." -Maher
Having missed the first month of the season, Varsho now looks set to return, and his impact could be immediate. As one of the Blue Jays' most valuable players, he brings a rare mix of power, speed, and elite defense. His presence in the lineup gives Toronto a major boost and makes them a more complete and dangerous team when he's on the field.
"Toronto has done alright without him so far, going 11-8 in his absence to start the year. However, his presence should elevate the team when he returns, even if his bat is a bit rusty initially." -Maher
Hopefully Varsho doesn't suffer any setbacks throughout the rest of his recovery.
