Moments ago, the Toronto Blue Jays were unable to convince free agent third baseman Alex Bregman to sign with the organization as he decided to leave the Houston Astros and head to the Blue Jays American League East rival the Boston Red Sox.

Breaking: Alex Bregman has agreed to a 3-year, $120 million deal with the Red Sox with two opt outs, sources tell @JesseRogersESPN

After spending nine years with the Astros, Bregman chose to sign a three-year deal with the Red Sox worth $120 million according to Chandler Rome of the Athletic.

Blue Jays strike out again in free agency

This offseason for the Blue Jays has been the most disappointing moment in recent memory. It seemed the team was always in the top 2 for landing key free agents including Juan Soto, Pete Alonso, Roki Sasaki and now Bregman.
BREAKING: The Red Sox have reportedly reached an agreement with Alex Bregman on a 3-year, $120M deal, per @JonHeyman

It seems no matter what general manager Ross Atkins and president mark Shapiro did to try to lure and attract prominent free agents hasn't gone well but has had some success when they managed to sign Anthony Santander, jeff Hoffman and Max Scherzer among a few.
Rome also revealed that this contract for Bregman also includes opt outs for each season which gives the player complete control of his destiny especially if he wants to leave the Red Sox if they can't compete.
There he goes folks ... and I don't blame the Cubs for not beating this.

The 30-year-old hit .260 with 26 homers and 75 RBIs in 145 games with Houston in 2024. He has a .272 career average with 191 homers and 663 RBIs in nine big league seasons, all with the Astros.

Akins now focusing on Spring Training and trades to improve roster

As stated in a recent press conference, Atkins announced that the Blue Jays will likely add to their team through trade rather than free agency.
Some players have been mentioned and linked to the Blue Jays including Chicago White Sox centre fielder Luis Robert Jr who holds a $15 million salary this year and is likely available.
It remains to be seen on what he will do next but it's safe to say Atkins must be bitterly disappointed in the results in this off season.

Do you think this dissapointing offseason for the Blue Jays means Ross Atkins should remain as general manager?
