Toronto Blue Jays Davis Schneider has a severely big hill to climb in Spring Training as it looks like he currently does not have a spot in the lineup.
Throughout the off-season there has been
rumors of the Blue Jays shopping Schneider around as the team currently has too many infielders and could use him to go acquire a left handed relief pitcher or solid hitter.
Blue Jays Davis Schneider in a tough position entering Spring Training
Schneider came out of the gate strong last season but then proceeded to struggled a lot offensively as he finished with a .191 batting average and .282 on base percentage.
Due to all of the Blue Jays additions in both position he plays, left field and second base, the chances of Schneider finding a spot in the lineup to start the season are very slim unless he surprises everyone at Spring Training.
Following a tough 2024 season at the plate, Toronto Blue Jays 2B/OF Davis Schneider is not necessarily guaranteed a roster spot heading into the upcoming season. -Fitzpatrick
Schneider likely does not have any chance at playing second base with Andres Gimenez now there and it the outfield, the Blue Jays currently have Joey Loperfido, Jonatan Clase, Myles Straw and Nathan Lukes ahead of him of the depth chart.
While his play was hit and miss at times throughout the whole season, trade deadline acquisition Joey Loperfido makes direct competition for Schneider in that they are both primary left fielders. Switch hitters Jonatan Clase and Steward Berroa also saw time in the Major Leagues last year and they both brought elite sprint speed with them (99th and 89th percentile via Baseball Savant respectively), something that Schneider does not have in his tool kit (27th percentile). -Fitzpatrick
The best chance for
Schneider to somehow make the lineup is to show in Spring Training that his hitting has drastically improved throughout the off-season since his fielding is already pretty decent.
It's all about his bat. Schneider's speed and fielding were around league average in 2024 and his bat-to-ball skills suffered with him ending the year below the Mendoza Line. -Fitzpatrick
While Schneider could still end up finding himself a spot, there is a good chance he at least starts the year in Triple-A unless the Blue Jays decide to trade him.
