Despite the rough weather and a corresponding power outage at the plate, the Toronto Blue Jays managed to grind out three consecutive wins and came close to securing just their second-ever four-game sweep of the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on Thursday.
Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider rips umpire after suffering a close loss to the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on Thursday.
A chaotic ending to Thursday night's 4-3 finale denied the Blue Jays their second four-game win streak of the young season. After falling behind 1-0, they clawed back with a clutch two-run seventh inning.
Shi Davidi of Sportnet writes that errors and defensive miscues allowed for the Red Sox to claw back and tie the game in the eighth inning.
"A wild finish in Thursday evening's 4-3 finale kept them from their second four-game win streak of the young season, as they rallied back from a 1-0 deficit with an opportunistic two-run seventh, surrendered the advantage in the eighth on two errors and a wild pitch, retook the lead in the top of the 10th on a George Springer sacrifice fly, but let it slip away in the bottom half on Jarren Duran's RBI single and Trevor Story's run-scoring groundout, which Andres Gimenez couldn't field cleanly enough for an out at home." -Davidi
Adding to the tension, some clear frustration over home-plate umpire Manny Gonzalez's strike zone-particularly in the later innings-gave the game's wild finish an extra layer of heat, despite a wind-chill that was dipping toward freezing.
Here's what Blue Jays manager John Schneider had to say following his team's loss in regards to his reliever
Nick Sandlin and umpire Gonzalez.
«I thought he [Sandlin] did his part. It's tough to battle nine hitters and an umpire. I got all the respect in the world for him [Gonzalez]. But it wasn't a great day for him behind the plate." -Schneider
The Blue Jays' offense mustered just three extra-base hits over 166 plate appearances during the four-game set, highlighting how they're barely getting by at the plate. They entered play on Thursday tied with Kansas City for the fewest homers in the majors with six.
Despite hitting just six home runs, a franchise low through 14 games, the Blue Jays have managed to post a solid 8-6 record as they head to Baltimore for a three-game series against the Orioles starting Friday.
