Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Davis Schneider is ready to show the organization that he is a capable offensive player as his career has gone through several ups and downs.
Schneider has made the opening day roster for a second year in a row as Blue Jays Daulton Varsho remains on the IR.
Schneider has shown highs and lows in his Blue Jays career
Schneider's story began back in 2017 when he was drafted by the organization as a 28th round pick.
The Blue Jays felt he was a much-needed shot in the arm in 2023 for the Blue Jays offense as he had shown that he was able to take on pitchers and had a good sense of pitch recognition.
After his 2024 opening day roster debut, he began to regress in his offense.
In 48 second-half games, he hit just .140 with 59 strikeouts and a .469 OPS. He recorded just eight extra-base hits and looked uncomfortable at the plate virtually every single time he grabbed a bat. He lost his ability to hit left-handed pitching and began to try too hard to search for hits. This led to much more strikeouts and much less quality contact. Eric Treuden
This season vital for Schneider to remain with Blue Jays
Schneider has decided to put his past seasons decline behind him and has made significant strides in this year's spring training.
Through 16 spring training games, he's hit a pair of home runs while driving in five runs, scoring six of his own, and walking nine times versus 11 strikeouts. That walk rate is such a crucial part of his game, as he's capable of being an on-base machine when you pair his gap power with an eye that can lead to a boatload of free passes.
His line so far his .345/.500/.655 and his OPS is up to 1.155. As we've seen, this is not a sustainable level of output for Schneider, but it certainly shows that the endless amount of work he's spent in the lab has resulted in a better player. - Eric Treuden
DAVIS SCHNEIDER HAS MADE THE TORONTO BLUE JAYS OPENING DAY ROSTER. NOW. WE. GO.
Schneider is currently on a one-year contract worth $800,000 and hopes to find a way to sign longer term with the Blue Jays which will likely mean a continuation of his output from spring training.
With several players in the mix, Schneider will need to play over and above what he does to keep himself in the lineup.
It remains to be seen on how he will handle this as the season is set to begin on Opening Day March 27th against the Baltimore Orioles at the Rogers Centre.
