The Toronto Blue Jays have opened the season with an 11-8 record, but if they hope to capture the American League East title, they might need to make a major trade to bolster their roster.

The Blue Jays' rotation currently includes Kevin Gausman, José Berrios, Chris Bassitt, and Max Scherzer, though Scherzer is currently sidelined on the injured list.

The Blue Jays may look to add another dependable starter. FanSided's Baron Dionis has suggested the Jays should pursue a blockbuster trade for Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcántara.

Here's why Dionis believes Alcántara would be a perfect addition to the Blue Jays lineup.
"If the Blue Jays trade for Alcantara, the Blue Jays could then bump (Easton) Lucas to the bullpen, where he'd provide some much-needed left-handed depth. The Blue Jays' high-leverage guys have been great, but the lower-leverage guys haven't. While Max Scherzer and Alex Manoah will likely be back at some point this year, the Blue Jays need more pitching depth, and Alcantara is the best arm available on the market." -Dionis

Aaliyan Mohammed from The Sporting News writes that Sandy Alcántara captured the National League Cy Young Award in 2022 after posting a 2.28 ERA with 207 strikeouts, while also leading the league with six complete games and 228 2/3 innings pitched. He's under a team-friendly contract, having signed a five-year, $56 million extension in 2021, which includes a $21 million club option for the 2027 season.
"He's been okay so far this year in his first acton back, posting a 4.70 ERA and a 7.04 K/9 in 15 1/3 innings. His WHIP is solid at 1.17 and he's limited opponents to a batting average of .182." -Dionis

Mohammed also writes that with a career ERA of 3.34, Sandy Alcántara has the potential to be a major asset for the Blue Jays. Although he missed the entire 2024 season, if he returns to his All-Star form, he could command a significant return in a trade.
