The Toronto Blue Jays could be interested in former World Series champion Charlie Morton in free agency as they look to improve their starting rotation.
Blue Jays could be interested in signing free agent Charlie Morton this off-season
Morton is coming off a decent season with the Atlanta Braves where he put up a 4.19 ERA in 165.1 innings pitched and despite being at the end of his career, he could still help the Blue Jays rotation.
Ho hum, just another season where Morton does what he does, posting 30 starts for the fourth consecutive season and the sixth consecutive season of 30+ starts (not including 2020). For the past 10 years, his ERA has hovered in the 3.00-5.00 range, and 2024 saw his ERA cross over to 4.19. -Hunter
Most projections have Morton signing for around $17.6 million this off-season which seems a little high for a 41 year old pitcher but if the Blue Jays could land him of a decent deal, this move could make sense.
Spotrac puts Morton's market value contract at $17.6 million, compared to other starting pitchers in his echelon like Lucas Giolito and Mitch Keller. Heading into his age 41 season, a one-year deal is likely all that's on the table for the New Jersey product. -Hunter
Morton's number draw some similarities to Blue Jays current pitcher Chris Bassitt who the Blue Jays have been rumored to be shopping which is why bringing in Morton for more money does not make much sense.
This could be a solid options if the Blue Jays end up unable to land any big name pitchers in free agency but this should not be their first option.
